On 6 February 2023, a powerful M7.8 earthquake struck Türkiye's Gaziantep province near the Syrian border, killing thousands of people and injuring thousands more in Turkey and Syria. There have been multiple strong aftershocks, felt as far away as Lebanon, Cyprus, Iraq and Egypt. One of the strongest quakes to hit the region in more than 100 years, it has caused extensive damage of homes, businesses and infrastructure; the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. Türkiye has declared a state of emergency and appealed for international assistance. Cisco Foundation has launched a Türkiye and Syria Earthquake disaster campaign which will support Americares, CARE, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Islamic Relief USA, Mercy Corps, and World Central Kitchen. Cisco employee gifts up to $10,000 will be matched and will not count against their annual $25K match allowance. Note on Tax Deductibility: This fund includes U.S.- based organizations. U.S. employees who make a credit card donation will receive a receipt for tax deductibility for the portion of the donation contributed to these organizations. If Yanomami is ill, so is Planet Earth The Yanomami Indigenous Territory is the largest of its kind in Brazil and was established in 1992 by the government. The Yanomami people believe they are the guardians of the Amazon Forest - in the words of Shaman Davi Kopenawa: “there is only one sky and we must take care of it, if it becomes sick, everything will come to an end”. Last month, Brazilian government declared a public health emergency in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory. Shocking images of starving children and elders were made public, bringing attention to the tragedy caused by years of illegal mining in this region of Amazon. Protecting the rights of Indigenous and local communities, and strengthening their economies, is not just the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do. Indigenous people take care of forests better than anyone in the world, and we all need healthy forests to slow climate change. The Green Team Brazil created a fund-raising campaign to support the Yanomami people through the work of ISA – Instituto Socioambiental, a non-profit organization devoted to defend Brazilian indigenous communities and their socio-environmental diversity. On the evening of Saturday, January 21st, 10 people were killed and 10 people were wounded during a Lunar New Year celebration affected by a shooting. On Monday, January 24th, another 7 people were killed in another shooting. This fundraiser is supporting VictimsFirst, a nonprofit partner of Raised By Us. VictimsFirst is a network of surviving victims of mass casualty crime and trusted supporters who have first-hand experiences of the problems and re-victimization that accompany these acts when there is a lack of coordinated effort and/or understanding of what survivors need.

Northern California has been hit with a series of storms, including atmospheric rivers, since December of 2022 and the storms are projected to continue through January. The resultant flash flooding has caused extensive damage, power outages, road closures, and multiple fatalities throughout the state, with additional damage expected to occur as the storms continue. President Biden officially declared that California is in a state of emergency and in need of federal aid on January 9, 2023. The following organizations are currently working to support those impacted by the storms.
