American National Red Cross
On Puerto Rico, about 450 Red Cross workers are helping to reconnect families and distribute critical relief supplies, including food and water. The Red Cross has sent in satellites, which are driven around on Reunification Trucks also carrying portable generators, laptops and power strips, enabling people to charge their cell phones to communicate with loved ones. Thousands of people have been in contact with their loved ones due to this effort. The satellites and technology also help aid workers as they coordinate relief efforts. In coordination with government and nonprofit partners, teams of Red Cross workers are helping to distribute water, meals, snacks, fresh fruit and vegetables, tarps, insect repellent and comfort kits. Red Cross health services and mental health workers are also on the ground, providing support and comfort to those affected. The Red Cross has already mobilized more than 500 tractor-trailer loads of relief supplies to help Puerto Rico.
Oxfam-America Inc.
Oxfam will channel vital resources and give technical support to the right people on the front lines, including the local government and local organizations that were there as this emergency struck and that will be there for the long road to recovery. Oxfam believes partnerships with local leaders result in an effective and sustainable response that best supports the affected communities, and we have used it to great success all around the world, and in the United States in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Hispanic Federation Inc
The Hispanic Federation is facilitating the deployment of fully trained and certified first responders, including paying for the flight to Puerto Rico and the accompanying arrangements. These first responders—comprised of NYPD and FDNY members and others—will join relief efforts on the island and provide the technical support and expertise so badly needed. Relief efforts include everything from examining the structural integrity of buildings so individuals can safely return to their homes to providing basic supplies like food and clean water.
Save the Children
Save the Children is currently on the ground in Puerto Rico responding to the needs of children. We are working closely with the Red Cross, FEMA, and local partners to assess the specific needs of children and families amid reports of massive damage. In the Dominican Republic, Save the Children was already on the ground responding to the needs of children and families following Hurricane Irma. We are now broadening our response across multiple sectors due to the added impact and damage sustained from Hurricane Maria. Over 110 aqueducts have been damaged or destroyed, limiting access to water for millions of people, and at least 23,600 have been forced to leave their homes.
World Central Kitchen, Inc.
From Houston to Puerto Rico, Chef José Andrés and our Chef Network have stepped out of their kitchens and on to the front lines to use the power of food to support communities affected by natural disasters. Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico last week, wiping out 80% of the agriculture industry and the entire power grid for the island. Over 3.5 million people are in need of food, water, shelter, and other necessities. Your donations will fund food, fuel, chef travel, and logistics.
